Because of the critical labor shortage in the construction industry, now is the right time to look into a furthering your career. Landing a job can be a daunting endeavour, but below are some useful tips that will help you become a better candidate for employers and help you land that lucrative job in construction.

Tip 1: Be willing to learn

Make sure you do some research about the construction industry. You don’t want to jump into a career path only to realise that it is not for you. Investigate roles and specialties in the sector, perhaps there is speciality that you might want to focus on. Arming yourself with knowledge from the get-go will give you a leg up in finding jobs later on.

Tip 2: Get the right education

To be considered for a job in construction you only need a high school diploma. Studies show that the more education you have, the more money you will likely earn. There are certain training programs that are great if you want to focus on one particular field in the industry. If hands-on training is what you seek, there are also programs that offer you that exposure. This will improve your chances of getting a job.

Tip 3: Use a recruitment service

There are recruitment companies that cater specifically for the construction industry. You’ll get a job faster using these services. They offer you as the job candidate with placement in jobs that are a fit for you. And most importantly, the services are free for you as the candidate – all fees are usually covered by the construction company that ends up hiring you.

Tip 4: Keep your resume up to date

Do not settle on one version of your resume. Your resume is a document that must change as you gain additional skills and work experience. You should also tailor your resume for specific job postings. Remember to include some of the job description language in it. Your recruiter will help you prepare a resume that is perfect for the occasion.

Tip 5: Be patient

Job search can be a lasting process – it often takes several months. Remember to be patient and persistent, and do not get discouraged. Talk to your recruiter for a better understanding of your position in the market and your career opportunities to approach the process with confidence and awareness. Network all you can, and send out as many resumes as possible. The more you invest yourself in the search and send out your resume, the higher your chances of landing that dream job in construction sooner.
