There are various pathways available for a career in construction for Gen Z. It is important for young people to know that the ‘traditional’ educational path is not the only option. High School
You can get your hands dirty while you are still in high school. Career and Technical education focuses on teaching direct career skills through hands-on learning. The construction component of CTE gives students an early feel of what it is like to work in a construction setting. These programs help high school students gain valuable experience and knowledge about important construction basics.
Apprenticeships
One of the advantages of apprenticeships and industry training is that you earn as you learn. Apprentices get paid for on-the-job-training. An apprenticeship usually takes around 2-4 years, at about 2,000 hours per year. Training is split into classroom-learning and on-the-job training. Apprenticeship programs are either federally registered or state-registered.
College
Community colleges and two-year associate’s degrees offer students the option to train for a career in construction. This is great for members of Gen Z who want to learn craft skills while still having more of a traditional college experience. Community colleges often collaborate with contractors and construction companies. They send trainees to community colleges because of their dedicated teaching staff and facilities.
University
If you wish to pursue the university route, there are a number of options. Construction management, engineering and architecture are construction career paths that require a four-year degree. This route offers preparation for positions in management and design. However it is important for Gen Z to know that even after you graduate, you should never stop learning.
